EIGHT

Setting off into the otherwise bleak environment of the building’s interior, both men cautiously moved up the steel cleated steps. Water seeped in through cracks in the ceiling. The pungent scent of mold filled the air.

Chance kept the M16 firmly pressed against his right shoulder. He scoured the floor as he moved the light from side to side. There was no movement of any kind. It was still and motionless. Will walked sideways up the steps. He kept his Maglite trained the way they came and his pistol at the ready.

Hitting the landing platform, Chance paused. He swept the wide-open area from left to right. Mounds of busted furniture littered the forlorn space. Training his light to the right, he noticed a door with “Security” labeled on a steel plate.

“There,” he softly whispered to Will. “Might be a good place to check out.”

“Sure. Whatever. As long as it’s secure and such, I really don’t care.”

They discreetly moved across the space and headed for the door. Chance’s attention swept over everything in their path as they closed the distance. He stopped just shy of the door and placed his back against the wall. Will followed suit. It was partially opened, but still difficult to make anything out from their current position.

Chance carefully reached down and grabbed the silver handle. He pressed his fingers against the grimy woodgrain and pushed slightly.

The hinges creaked as the door swung open. He cautiously peered inside, running his light over the periphery of the room. Busted furniture littered the space. Most of the windows still appeared to be intact as well as the ceiling. There was a section of the floor that was missing in the far corner. It wasn’t the most ideal place to hold up in, considering it wasn’t secure, but Chance was hoping they wouldn’t have to spend any more time there than they needed to.

“Come on.”

Both men slipped inside, and shut the door behind them. Will propped a beat-up chair under the handle as Chance quickly swept the area. He checked each room and office, and found no signs of rovers.

“Home sweet home for the night,” Chance offered as he lowered his rifle.

They moved over to the portion of the ceiling that was missing and busted. Chance shined his light up into the darkness, finding that the floors above were damaged as well.

Will removed his gear from his shoulder and plopped down onto the unforgiving concrete. A large chunk of carpet had been ripped or torn away from the area. He laid back and rested his head against a brown metal desk.

“I’m going to get us some wood to get a fire going.” Chance slung the M16 over his shoulder and walked away.

Flashes of light briefly lit up the room as deep thunderous vibrations shook the structure. Banging and breaking noises echoed from within the darkness that plagued the space.

The only wood that was offered to Chance was from the few chairs that encompassed the drab office space. He got to work
